Facebook is reminding users to do a quick check up of their security settings

“We want everyone to have a safe experience on Facebook. That’s why we have dedicated teams and intelligent security systems working around the clock to help keep your account secure,” explains Melissa Luu-Van, product manager, in a company blog post.

Luu-Van says Facebook users are able to try a new security tool called Security Checkup, which makes it easier to find and use security controls on their account.

“We also provide optional security controls that you can turn on for added protection; you get to decide which features you want to use,” she says.

“You’ll see a reminder at the top of your News Feed. Click ‘Get Started’ and follow the prompts through three easy steps,” Luu-Van explains.

The first step helps users log out of devices they may not have used in a while or forgot about, so they are only logged into Facebook where they choose.

Next, users can turn on a feature called ‘login alerts’, which allows users to know if anyone else tries to log into their account. “We’ll send you a notification or email alert if someone tries to log into your account from an unfamiliar device or browser,” Luu-Van says.

Finally, users will be able to read few tips for how to keep their password strong and unique. “We recommend not using your Facebook password anywhere else online, never sharing it with anyone, and avoiding common words that may be easy to guess,” Luu-Van explains.

“In just a few easy steps, your account gets some extra protection and you get some extra peace of mind.”

Security Checkup is available globally on desktop and will be coming to mobile soon
